Chrysanthemums Blue Mist Shrub Sept

Fall is here and the gardens are taking a lot of my time right now getting them ready for winter. I always hate this time of the year having to cut back all my beautiful flowers.

Photobucket
The Chrysanthemum in containers. This is a pink and white. The white is very delicate looking on this one.

Photobucket
More of the pink and white. This sported off my pink and it will be interesting to see if it does the same next year.

Photobucket
The solid pink Mum with a small Hosta in the center. Now my intentions are to leave these containers where they sit. This is on the North side of my patio so light shade most of the day and direct sun for a couple hours, but wide open completely to those NW winds which can be the hardest part about winter. I intend to find something that I don't have to move containers with. Looking ahead to that old age and not being able to. We'll see if these can come back next Spring and if they end up being what I can keep in there year long.

Photobucket
A little closer up of the Blue Mist shrub. Color keeps getting deeper on these as the weeks go by. I will hard prune these again in the Spring to about 6 inches to get them to fill out even fuller.

The colors on that mum are stunning. Most of mine are the traditional burnt orange or lemon yellow. Maybe I will add some of that color to the garden..thanks!

I hate to cut my flowers back, too! Sometimes I don't do it, then I feel guilty. Your mums are so pretty. And the blue mist shrub is one of my favorites. I noticed this morning mine is just starting to bloom. So exciting!

Hi Cher
I like your pink mums, I usually have pink to wine coloured ones myself.
You know summer's over when you have to start cutting back and pulling out the spent annuals. At least we get to start all over again next year. :-)

The Chrysanthemums are very pretty. It will be interesting to see if they survive the winter. I hope so!

Gorgeous flowers! Such a good flower Momma you are ;)

What usually happens to your mums, do they die & you have to get new ones each year? We just leave them in the ground all year long here (Western Australia)

Your site is shrieking in pink today, the post, the font color, the site design, everything, haha! That blue mist provided the contrast and is lovely.

Pretty! I haven't begun to winterize, mostly because it rains all the time now. I have to say, I don't do much but cover over the graphed part of the few roses I have left. Over the years, I've killed so many roses that all I have are a couple old-timers and shrub roses.

I was told that it's best not to cut back things right now as it stimulates new growth. Is this wrong? I generally just cut the dead off in the Spring. Mainly because I like to procrastinate...

I'm going to have to add a blue mist shrub. That is beautiful!!
Love the color.

Your Blue Mist shrub and Mums are beautiful.

To answer a few questions. Yes my Mums come back in the ground, but it's yet to be determined if they are going to come back planted in shallow containers, especially with facing the NW winds.

Gale I have numerous starts of Red Double Knockouts the next time your in the area.

I have to admit the Blue Mist is gorgeous in bloom. Thankfully it is or all of them would have been gone already since it blooms so late. :)

Hi! The colors of your mums are lovely! I have tried growing them in our place, but sadly they don't really acclimatize on warm and usually hot weather even if they're placed in a shaded area. Happy Gardening! :)

Love the blue mist so delicate those little blooms. Do you plant any fall bulbs?
Have a great weekend!

Your chrysanthemums are very pretty. I don't usually grow them because they only last through the fall for me and rarely come back. I also like your 'Blue Mist' shrub. I wish it would grow in my zone!

I love that color! Lovely.. Wish I have a garden :)

The caryopteris is wonderful... I've never tried one as I've assumed the rabbits would find them delectable. The latest excitement here has been possums digging out all my new primulas I planted this fall... always something! Larry

Love love love the color of those mums! I don't think I have ever seen them in blue. What we get here in SoCal are reds, yellows, white and orange.

Happy weekend!

Hello Dahlink, what a fabulous blog you have here. I found you through the 'Just Winging It' Blog Hop.

You have got some cracking photographs there. I love the deep pink colour of the c'mums. I have never thought of planting a hosta with them - I thought they had different light requirements. But now I see they look good, I'll give 'em a go!!

Anyway, I am now following you.

Hope you can stop by and vist me too ;-)

I used to have a Blue Mist Shrub but lost it to a renovation on our home when I got demolished! I always liked that shrub! Seeing yours reminds me of it. I should get another one! I haven't started cutting anything back, I think I've gotten lazy!

Sissy said...

That will be an interesting experiment, about the mums. I know they thrive in clay, but I sure will be curious to see if they come back. I am sure the hosta will, nothing kills them!
I wonder how you got starts of the Knock out? I have a lot of them, but I haven't seen any spreading, is it something you are doing to get more or are they sprouting?!

Hi! Did it work now? I had used the follow button at the top and it told me I was now following publicly...but after seeing your comment I went to click it again and it gave me the option to follow again, so I clicked it, it said I was now following. I decided to click it again and see if it gave me the option to stop following...NOPE it asked if I wanted to follow again.
So I clicked the gfc join site [sometimes that box doesn't pop up] and it seems like it worked...
