Malus Purple Prince Picea abies Reflexa Freeze Damage Hosta

Gardening in recent years has become a battle between mother nature and those gardeners dedicated enough not to give up. Between droughts, summer weather during Winter which enabled most of our plants to leaf out and mother nature dared to tease us and take it back. My garden has been hit a lot, fortunately not everything but with some things only time will tell.

Photobucket
Malus Purple Prince - Crabapple had a beautiful blooming season. Very early as with everything else, but I got to see a couple weeks of the beautiful flowers before a hard freeze took out so much here in this area as well as across the country.

Photobucket
The Peony tree blooms earlier than my regular Peony and has a couple blooms started. Since the freeze hit so hard here, I am not sure if these will open or not.

Photobucket
Just a few of my Hosta coming up here, way too early. Quite a number of my Hosta have been severly affected by the freeze. I haven't decided if I will cut them to the ground and let them completely leaf out again or just cut off the freeze damaged leaves. Since it's either all of the Hosta affected or the greatest part of them, I probably will cut the affected ones completely down. Several of these that were up this much were some of the affected ones.

Photobucket
This Bloomerang Lilac had just started opening her blooms so am not sure if they will finish or not. I hope it didn't hurt it for any reblooming either.

Photobucket
Picea abies Reflexa. This is a weeper so the height is totally controlled to how tall I want it. Since electric lines are above, I couldn't have anything really tall. Well all I can say is that I am glad a lot still hadn't bloomed or leafed out and that I have some conifers to look at. That Solomon's Seal coming up on each side of the Viburnum in back with a Painted Fern in front of those. The Ferns were affected by the freeze. I hope things improve here and around the country for this gardening season.

That Malus Purple Prince looks stunning, and nice to see your Hostas coming back as well. The garden's looking lovely, very neat and tidy and I hope your conditions do improve for this coming gardening season :)

Jednym słowem, u Was też mróz uszkodził kwiaty. Jest to przykre, bo możemy wielu kwiatów nie zobaczyć. Kwitnące drzewko jest śliczne. Pozdrawiam.
In a word, from you or frost damaged flowers. It is sad, because we do not see many flowers. Flowering tree is beautiful. Yours.

Sorry to hear your plants suffered from the freeze. Let us know if you decide to cut them back. I think they should releaf just fine. Have a good weekend. c

Hi Cher,
Hopefully the weather will be more normal in a few weeks. Sorry so many of your plants were damaged. I know how disappointing that is. At least you have that pretty crabapple to cheer you up! I spent yesterday evening covering little plants with upside down mason jars because a storm with inch and a half hail was heading our way. It's pouring rain now and I see on the news that some really bad weather is heading for the midwest. Hang tight!

Your photos are beautiful!... I hope the freeze did not take too much of a toll on your garden, xoxo Julie Marie

I have been trying to decide what to do about my freeze damaged hostas as well. I kept them covered but there are a few that still have damage.
Your crabapple is gorgeous!!!

Beautiful blooms on the tree. Hope you didn't get too much damage and things will rebound nicely. Have a nice weekend.

Sorry, that is sure a real disappointment. Just hope most come back. The tree was beautiful.

Oh, I hope all your lovely plants survive the terrible weather.

That tree is a stunner!

The crabapple is awesome. I hope everything grows well for you this year.

Sorry to hear that some of your plants and blooms got touched by the cold. The Crabapple was just gorgeous.
Lilacs are pretty tough once they are already in bloom so it will be okay. My hostas were under the eaves of house so were not burnt. Things are just too early this year. It is a long time until the middle of May.

I see you've been hit by frost too! I knew that early warm up was going to get the plants in trouble! I've never cut a hosta down to the ground after it started so I wonder what it will do. My hostas are only up out of the ground about an inch or two so they are safe but it's been tough on a lot of things. I have some tulips that look pretty weird right now too!
Your crabapple was fabulous- what a perfect shape too! Let's cross the fingers and hope for things to balance out.

Awww, so sorry to learn you have been hit by frost. It can really do some damage. I love looking at your blooms. Spring is here. I hope your plants and trees are make it. I hope you come by for a visit. I just posted Spring photos of our yard. Enjoy the week-end. Linda

So sorry that so much was affected by the freeze. You're right - us gardeners have to be more stubborn than Mother Nature! The crabapple is just lovely. But I just adore that weeping tree. Such an interesting specimen.

Hi Cher
Decisions huh? Me too, and I did lose some plants since there was little snow cover this winter.
Your crabapple is stunning.

The crabapple is so pretty! I hope your plants recover from the frost. They were looking so healthy. I think hostas are pretty hardy so I bet they will be fine.

People been reporting the weather been weird this month. Same here in Australia. Its mid-autumn but feels like summer for a week now. Love those blooms.

I hope you don't have too much damage from the cold. Gorgeous crabapple tree. So full of blooms too.

Excellent crabapple tree!!! I agree with you 100% These past years have been a challenge for all gardens in all parts. But it just demonstrates how gardening is constantly changing art:) Cross your fingers that we have a "normal" summer. All my best. Chris

After coming home today (from vacation) we enjoyed our flowers BUT there is a frost warning for tonight. My brother in North Carolina lost his kiwi & grape vines to frost while we were there a few days ago.

I'm sorry you've experienced frost loss. It HAS been a strange year.

The Malus Purple Prince is so awesome. Actually it's my very first time to see such lovely tree. You are really a green thumb gardener for cultivating these lovely plants.

followed you...hope you could follow mine too

The trees have had a banner blooming year for sure. I hope the frost did not do too much damage. I was wondering about your garden. We turned out ok here, but in nearby counties went to 24 and 28... It sure is decieving... I hate that.. good luck.

Everything looks great, Cher. Funny that your hostas would be affected by the freeze, but they must be very used to the nicer weather! I guess they adapt. Hopefully they will come along, they are looking wonderful!

Pretty! We are forever marking things down in the garden center dirt cheap. Check out the carts in the back of your Lowes garden center. Lots of perennials. I need to stop getting things...

BTW, herbs and veggies are 1.50 a pot right now.

Hi Cher, So good to visit you again! Love your Picea abies Reflexa, your lilacs, and your flowering crabapple. I'm sorry the freeze affected your area. We had burning of the hydrangea leaves but most everything else shows little to damage, for which I am thankful. Have a nice weekend!
Blessings, Beth

Your crabapple is extraordinary!! We've had weird freezes, too, but I don't think our temps were as low as yours. My freeze damage was minimal. The Solomon's Seal will be beautiful with the viburnum. :o)

Love that gorgeous tree. We are blessed in that the only thing that was cold damaged here was our saucer magnolia. I hope your hosta recover from the freeze damage. I'm thinking you're on the right track in terms of cutting back the damaged leaves. How frustrating!

Oh i am sorry about those which are affected by the frost, but that first Malus is surely a reason for celebration. I still remember it when smaller, now it is already a tree!
