August in Ohio Zone 6

The summer heat is always horrible in the month of August and of course our gardens start suffering by this time of the year, although this year has been so much better than the last few and although Spring was late and most of us suffered losses from the past Winter, overall it's been a really good gardening season.

The Daylilies start out next to the Hosta bed and the Japanese Maple Emperor 1.

I moved Honeysuckle Major Wheeler up here from the Daylily and Iris bed and pruned it up quite a bit and it hasn't missed a beat.

After moving out the Honeysuckle, I added in the Sambucus Sutherland Gold. It should some years down the road fill out most of the backdrop shown here and the Sambucus Black Lace to the left does well in this dry area so felt this would be a good choice. Love the golden fern like leaves of the Sambucus shrubs.

Another gold one that I added in a couple years ago. The Gold Smoketree. I am very happy at the growth it has put on this year. Blooms take a couple years so I am assuming next year it will bloom and add to the beauty. Hydrangea Limelight and Quickfire on each side.

Another area I have redone. Pulled out a Lilac and Hydragnea Vanilla Strawberry. Neither doing what I wanted. The center conifer is Picea pungens Procumbens that I will train up about 5 foot and then let weep. On each side I have added the new Barberry called Orange Rockets. Size is still up in the air but going by Sooner Nursery they feel they will be 6 to 8 feet which is my hope of over 6. The color combination should be great, now for the patience to watch them mature.

Daylily collage of the beauties that have been blooming here this year, most of which are through now for the season, yet a few will still rebloom.

And the few Lilies that I have gave me a lovely bloom season but are over with now also.

I always enjoy a glimpse of your Japanese maple...and glad the honeysuckle survived its move. It HAS been a good gardening year (and we got a GREAT rain yesterday, did you)!

Your lilies must have been a lovely sight. Ours here are rather ordinary but have brought me so much pleasure the last few weeks...

Glad to read you've had a good gardening year Cher, despite the late start. Sounds exactly like 2013 over here.
You've a wonderful collection of Daylilies. They are incredibly useful in the garden, aren't they?
Your choice of new shrubs are lovely. I do hate the wait!

Such lovely dayliles, Cher! I love that Gold Smoketree, too. It's amazing how everything has rebounded from our horrible winter!

The garden is looking good despite the heat. Some plants seem to be happier with more heat. We've had a more reasonable summer this year. Sorry you got the extra heat.

Cher, Your daylilies, hydrangeas, and hostas are looking fantastic. Being a daylily fanatic, I especially enjoyed your collage of daylilies. Love your honeysuckle corner too! It was a tough winter, but looks like you had a good summer in the garden. :)

I really like your choice of daylilies! They must provide a lot of color in your garden. Your 'Major Wheeler' honeysuckle looks very happy in that spot. I planted one last year , and I don't think it survived. I should have transplanted it when I saw it was struggling!

Cher, I've been looking forward to your August post! Everything looks just great. I especially enjoyed seeing the collage of your daylilies. You have quite a few! The Santa's Little Helper is just so sweet and different.

PS, the one called 'Woodside Rhapsody' is also lovely. How would you describe that dark colour? I have one like that and can never decide what to call it. It's darker than burgandy and I already have one I call burgandy. (I don't know the real names.) Would 'wine coloured' describe it? (Sorry if this seems like a really dumb question, but I seriously cannot decide.)

Your garden is looking great! Love the daylilies. I wish I knew the names to mine.
Hope our winter is not as severe this year!

You have done a fair bit of renovation in your beds Cher, and I was interested to see a number of shrubs you've added. An excellent collage of daylilies with their name for readers to ID and for your own use.
I hope you will come and link this post to Mosaic Monday on Sunday afternoon to share your beautiful gardens.

Beautiful gardens and a stunning array of daylilies. My garden is wild and unruly this year as I have not been able to work in it...and we have had a hard winter, cold spring and now a wet and cool summer...so the flowers are plentiful but the veggies are unhappy.

I love your collection of daylilies, they must have added so much beautiful colour to your gorgeous garden.

Hi Cher,
What a great gardening season you ended up having. Your borders are really maturing. I love the gold Smokebush. My purple one grew a few feet this year, too (finally--I was beginning to think it would never grow!).

You have a lovely daylily collection. I bet you get a lot pleasure seeing each new variety bloom.
