Ohio Garden of Hosta Acer Trees and November 2014 Snow

Hard to believe that Nov 17, 2014 has already brought this amount of snow to Ohio. Looks like it definitely is going to be another year like last winter which was awful. 

The main garden always looks pretty though, whether it's all alight with the colors of the season or covered in white snow, looking almost like a black and white photo, other than the peek of green on the Pinus Nana on standard or the burgundy leaves still showing on the Acer p. Fireglow.

Hard to believe there are still burgundy leaves on those shrubs they are so covered with the snow.

This is the same above view a month earlier, after doing some cutting back of perennials and leaving only shrubs.

I did a lot of work out here this year with all of the losses to be had after last winter. The right side here is bare but I had just cut back any perennials and had added the Japanese Maple in there. Figure it will take a few years to fill in like I want. Next Spring I intend to remove my Crabapple from the front yard and move this Paperbark to that location. I love the Crabapple, It's a glorious tree in spring but the suckers from it are way more than I ever planned and I just don't want to deal with them. This is a huge project so my brother will be coming in to handle this for me. The Paperbark has only been in a couple years so I should be alright moving it.

The other side of the Hosta bed. I just finished the right side of this. There are Hosta in the corner area and all alongside the shed. Should come in looking good for next year. Hoping I can keep the Hosta doing well with slugs. If not I'll have to rethink the plantings. Have possible changes I'll make on the left with shrubs but will wait to see how things look next year with what I have there right now.

The Bluemist shrub was loaded with blooms this year and outgrew it's area more than usual. Guess I need to prune back further next year than I did this year.

Well it's been a while since I have been on my blog. Time has gotten away from me and still is which I guess over winter is not as big a deal but will try to visit more than I have in the last couple months. Have some nice holidays!

August in Ohio Zone 6

The summer heat is always horrible in the month of August and of course our gardens start suffering by this time of the year, although this year has been so much better than the last few and although Spring was late and most of us suffered losses from the past Winter, overall it's been a really good gardening season.

The Daylilies start out next to the Hosta bed and the Japanese Maple Emperor 1.

I moved Honeysuckle Major Wheeler up here from the Daylily and Iris bed and pruned it up quite a bit and it hasn't missed a beat.

After moving out the Honeysuckle, I added in the Sambucus Sutherland Gold. It should some years down the road fill out most of the backdrop shown here and the Sambucus Black Lace to the left does well in this dry area so felt this would be a good choice. Love the golden fern like leaves of the Sambucus shrubs.

Another gold one that I added in a couple years ago. The Gold Smoketree. I am very happy at the growth it has put on this year. Blooms take a couple years so I am assuming next year it will bloom and add to the beauty. Hydrangea Limelight and Quickfire on each side.

Another area I have redone. Pulled out a Lilac and Hydragnea Vanilla Strawberry. Neither doing what I wanted. The center conifer is Picea pungens Procumbens that I will train up about 5 foot and then let weep. On each side I have added the new Barberry called Orange Rockets. Size is still up in the air but going by Sooner Nursery they feel they will be 6 to 8 feet which is my hope of over 6. The color combination should be great, now for the patience to watch them mature.

July Hydrangea Hosta Ninebarks Ohio Zone 6

This season gardening started much later than usual but it caught up pretty quickly for us in zone 6.

The Hosta garden has been what I've been working on this year although most of that is not shown in this photo. Just waiting for the Acer palmatun Emperor to grow enough to do a little shading of this area.

The Ninebarks on are doing some nice growing this season. Feel they''ll easily be above the fence within the next couple of years.

Hydrangea Quick Fire in June in bloom and then again in July showing how much it's pinked up already.

The Daylilies have been blooming across the yard this last month and adding some lovely color and blooms.

The Coreopsis is one I can count on for blooms most of the gardening season. Heuchera's add some extra color to the gardens.

The bottom corner which I'm thinking I might want to add some large flowering shrubs here. Didn't think I would but I am now considering it.

The Coneflowers blooming help add some color around the Viburnum during the summer months.

June Gardens in Ohio

The Winter continues to show it's damages here in Ohio. Numerous things have already been replaced. Quite a lot was killed to the roots and waiting on the growth to return on them as with my Heath/Heather.

The Acer palmatum Fireglow came through the Winter as did all but one of my Japanese Maples. That one is a big disappointment to me.

The Peonies look lovely this year and the smell was wonderful. The Dogwood Golden Shadows sits to the left and I just love this shrub because it has the looks of a Japanese Maple in it's growth.

The purple one here to Iris Pagan Dance that I got in tribute to my beautiful Yorkie CH Goldenray Pagan Dancer. These I just moved over to the right side where some of the whites were.

The Ninebark Diablo's are looking great this year. Flowering up and showing great color.

Acer palmatum Garnet is looking lovely in the ground this year.

I love the Picea abies Reflexa and the harsh weather this past Winter didn't seem to cause it any harm either.

Ohio Spring 2014 Crabapple Japanese Maple

This past Winter has taken it's toll on most of us this year. I am still counting my losses. Have done some replacing so far. My conifers look to be ok as our my trees, but I think I have a tremendous amount of loss with my Heather although I am going to give it a couple more weeks before replacing it. That will be a massive job although I have replaced a few in the back.

Malus Purple Prince AKA Crabapple, finally blooms here in Ohio. Pruned out 1/3 of this tree last year as it was so thick with berries the branches were on the ground and it was difficult mowing. After flowering I will prune out some of the lower limbs on the branches again this year.

We have almost nothing blooming here after our Winter and things are just starting to leaf out. The Acer palmatum Fireglow is starting to leaf out as are the Ninebarks to the left and the Hydrangea to the right.

The Iris are coming up well and will start their blooming later this month. Everything should be much further along like the Iris are but only a few other things are growing fast. The Yorkie from the dog museum highlights this area.

I added this Fothergilla Mt Airy last Fall to the gardens and I love what I see with it's start to the season.

The Hydrangea Limelight. I have two of these in the yard. This particular one looks like those are new blooms on it but those are leftover from last year, the other one the blooms are typical and showing burn on them from the seasons.

The Grape Hyacinth are up and blooming and adding a little bit of color into the yard this Spring. Since there is so little of that to be seen I had to get a photo. I'm spending my time now waiting a couple weeks if I can hold out and see what all I need to replace. Not only has Spring taken forever to arrive but with so much lost and appears lost, we in the North are using up even more of our gardening season.

Snow Photos in January in Ohio

The Winter of 2014 is one making records. We are so far past the amount of snow we should have, let alone the rigid freezing weather making history in this area. The whole country has been affected but the Midwest especially so with fresh snow coming down again as I write this.

Photos of the snow are always beautiful to take and view while it's still white and pristine. For me it just keeps me in and doing things about the house that need doing.

Decided to redo the floors in a couple of the bedrooms. The laminate choice here is a little lighter with the dark areas to tie everything together with the furniture. As you can see I keep a few different Yorkies in here.

I love the laminate choice here for my bedroom. The nice thing about both these is that they have a little texture to the laminate that is sorely lacking in most laminate.
