Ohio Spring 2014 Crabapple Japanese Maple

This past Winter has taken it's toll on most of us this year. I am still counting my losses. Have done some replacing so far. My conifers look to be ok as our my trees, but I think I have a tremendous amount of loss with my Heather although I am going to give it a couple more weeks before replacing it. That will be a massive job although I have replaced a few in the back.

Malus Purple Prince AKA Crabapple, finally blooms here in Ohio. Pruned out 1/3 of this tree last year as it was so thick with berries the branches were on the ground and it was difficult mowing. After flowering I will prune out some of the lower limbs on the branches again this year.

We have almost nothing blooming here after our Winter and things are just starting to leaf out. The Acer palmatum Fireglow is starting to leaf out as are the Ninebarks to the left and the Hydrangea to the right.

 photo Iris414.jpg
The Iris are coming up well and will start their blooming later this month. Everything should be much further along like the Iris are but only a few other things are growing fast. The Yorkie from the dog museum highlights this area.

 photo FothergillaMtAiry4-14.jpg
I added this Fothergilla Mt Airy last Fall to the gardens and I love what I see with it's start to the season.

 photo HydrangeaLL414.jpg
The Hydrangea Limelight. I have two of these in the yard. This particular one looks like those are new blooms on it but those are leftover from last year, the other one the blooms are typical and showing burn on them from the seasons.

 photo HyacinthGrape414.jpg
The Grape Hyacinth are up and blooming and adding a little bit of color into the yard this Spring. Since there is so little of that to be seen I had to get a photo. I'm spending my time now waiting a couple weeks if I can hold out and see what all I need to replace. Not only has Spring taken forever to arrive but with so much lost and appears lost, we in the North are using up even more of our gardening season.

Everything looks like it's coming along nicely, Cher. I bet you were happy to see those lovely little grape hyacinth's come up! Aren't they a treat. I don't ever remember things being so late as they are now.

Sorry to hear about your losses, it's been such a harsh winter there. But glad to see you still have so many plants doing so well :)

I hope your heathers make it. They are always so pretty. The crabapple is beautiful! And you have some nice color from your 'Fireglow' Japanese Maple. Your tree certainly has a nice glow. Mine isn't too showy yet. I'm so glad that spring has arrived in your garden!

I miss my crabapple. Yours is beautiful! I hope you haven't lost as much as you think. My Rose bush still looks dead but I'm still waiting. We don't have leaves yet- just getting buds. I guess now and then we have to expect some loss but it does feel like a punch in the gut especially having endured such a tough long winter.

Hi Cher, Your crabapple is a real beauty! Good to see your Japanese maple is leafing out too. Happy Spring!

Some life and colour finally, and the crabapple is pretty all decked out in flowers. If that is heuchera in the third photo, I'm envious as mine pretty much die back to the roots and struggle to leaf out all over again.

That crabapple is gorgeous! Mine is just starting to bloom. So far I think all of my hostas came back. I lost a lot of my forget-me-nots but other than that surprisingly most everything is coming back.

I lost several plants, too. Sometimes it's hard to tell what's dead and what's just slow to wake up. Your crabapple is just incredible! I love how showy and vibrant it is.

Morning Cher. Thanks for your comment. I think that spring is going to happen all at once! I mean I think we will have things blooming at the same time, that don't normally bloom together. Things are coming along though. ;)

Have a wonderful day.

Sometimes strange weather allows for good things too. I bet it was a very good lettuce year there. Not much comfort for a flower gardener, I know, but probably someone was happy. Sorry about your heathers. They were spectacular - and will be again!

Always hard to lose favorite plants. Seems winter was rougher on your garden than normal. I think I know now what hasn't survived. Still holding out hope on a couple of them as it did stay cool very late this year. The plants you have look good and you have some color!

Hi Cher you didn't post for 3 months, at last the snow is gone and the growths are so very beautiful. I've seen those crabapples in Sweden and was so smitten with it, just like the crocus, snowdrops, pansies and wisteria.

Przykre, że masz straty w ogrodzie, ale to co jest, pięknie wygląda. Pozdrawiam.
Sad that you have a loss in the garden, but what is looks beautiful. Yours.

I have watched that crabapple grow from when it was small, and then now. How lovely it is without the green leaves! These scenes totally none in our part of the world. By the way Cher, you have 2 links in your comments, can you remove the 2nd backlink? Anyway it just falls on the same blogsite, thanks so much.
