Summer Garden in Ohio Zone 6 Extreme Heat and Drought

Photobucket
The family garden is still looking decent even with the constant 90's and some days over 100, but it's taking it's toll. These are photos from a couple weeks ago. Afraid the last couple weeks with too many days in the 100's has really ruined my gardens for the year and I most likely won't have much to post after this.

Photobucket
The Echinacea, Daisies and Coreopsis are all blooming in the heat which they tend to handle much better than a lot of other perennials.

Photobucket
The backline is surviving but the extreme heat hit so early this year that I haven't had any significant growth on my flowering shrubs which is a big disappointment as I wait for them to grow up. Most of the Hydrangea are blooming and others have buds that are opening up now.

Photobucket
The back corner with the Viburnum Autumn Jazz is through blooming and setting up the berries for winter. No further blooms on my Clematis there so hoping again that this has not totally burned up this year as the second one is gone.

Photobucket
The shed garden was still holding on but again the heat has taken it's toll on everything in the last couple of weeks.

Photobucket
Daylily Ruby Spider. One of my favorite Daylilies as it's such an eye catcher.

Photobucket
Daylily Stella De Oro. Love how much she reblooms here with her bright yellow cheery color.

Photobucket
Daylily Bordello Queen is one of my first Daylily bloomers each season and always so elegant and soft.

Your daylilies looks lovely Cher. Sorry to hear that the high temperatures you guys are experiencing have taken its toll on the garden. Hopefully you guys gets some relief from the heat soon.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie.
Sometime this year is not happy for our gardens. In our winter, which destroyed many crops, in other heat waves and droughts, and more rains elsewhere. Your lilies are, however beautiful. Ma, hoping that the rain with you last fall, and bring relief to the plants. Best regards.

My garden is in a sad way, we are getting rain now but the grasshoppers are eating every thing. Your photo's look good.

Hang in there! We finally got a cool down and some desperately-needed rain in Tennessee after weeks and weeks of drought and high temperatures. Hope that nicer weather arrives in Ohio soon!

In spite of heat and drought you've still got some lovely blooms. I hope you get some relief soon.

It's been a tough summer, for us too in southern Ontario. You really get to see what plants can handle drought, which is why I use so many native varieties in my gardens.
At least you've had daylilies blooming and others, if not for their full potential. I always worry about the trees during these times.
Hope you're keeping cool Cher.

I think yours are looking a little better than mine. You can always count on the day lilies to come through!! I love that Ruby Spider. Very pretty.

Hi Cher!
I guess we'll all be looking for plants that tolerate a bit more heat in the coming years. Your day lilies are so pretty. Just a little while now, then maybe a nice, cool Fall.

The heat this year is taking its toll and the lack of rain makes it so much worse. I hope you soon get some relief from the dry weather. You have some gorgeous blooms. Hate when the weather and bugs mess with the gardens so bad.

I'm glad your echinacea, daisies and coreopis are doing well. That's my favorite bed of yours. The hostas look good, too. We've gotten a little more rain this year so my daisies actually bloomed this year. I hope you get some rain soon.

I was just out watering my zone 6 drought devastated garden earlier today. Just don't want to loose anything this year and have to replant next year. Sigh...really wish it would rain...

I am amazed at seeing your Japanese maples looking so well... any of mine that are getting too much sun, despite my maintaining moisture, have scalded leaves. In years like this it's almost a blessing to have the bloom past so I can get the damaged foliage cleaned up and some sense of order in the gardens. I know you've had it even hotter than we've had... we too are desperate for rain... Larry

Hang in there with the heat. A break may come and you'll get a revival this fall. I'm impressed your daylilies look so nice still. Mine are toast and I've noticed the same thing all over town.

Hi Cher, There's lots of beauty in your garden. I am so sorry about the heat and drought; we too are facing this and it's been quite challenging and disappointing. Praying for rain!

It has been hot here also, but nothing like your area. I love the Bordello Queen daylily, so pretty.

Well good luck staying cool and keeping your plants limping along through the heat! After a week of temps in the 90's, we're dropping down to the 80's for the next while and I'm so relieved. My newly planted Korean dogwood trees were looking a little stress out by it all.

I share your sadness about way the heat and drought have taken out our yards and flowerbeds... I, too, am concerned about the 3 clematis vines I have. I'm pretty sure the newest of the three is done for. The rest? I guess we'll see.

Thanks for visiting my blog. If we did not water everything every week our flowers would be gone. Carrel sat the water hoses so he can soak all my yard with a 4 opening water facet. We have water hoses running every where. Your daises look so pretty. I wish I had kept mine but they grew so tall and fell down. I will buy fence wire this year and build a fence around them to hold them up. This fall I will plant me some more. We had not had any rain in three weeks until July 5th now I want to see some sun. The sun came out yesterday long enough for Carrel to cut the grass.

Hi Cher,
Everything looks so nice in those pictures. Sorry to hear that the heat is destroying it.

My garden is about done for the year as there is not much left to bloom. I kept it watered, but all the lilies bloomed at least two weeks early.

I hope next year it goes back to the normal bloom times!

Andrea said...

Am sorry about your flowers Cher. At least you have waters in the pipes, unlike us here during the dry season that even water for household use is difficult. So we really cannot water our plants, they are just left on their own.

This weather has wreaked havoc on my garden. We did get some rain last night...I hope we all get more rain and milder temperatures.

dorothy said...

The weather has been intense here, too. But then again triple digits are common here in the summer. I think your plants look happy. And if you are still getting blooms from your hydrangeas, you are doing something right!

Casa Mariposa said...

I think your garden looks better than you realize. :o) Your daylilies are fabulous! I agree with Dorothy - if you're hydrangea are happy, you're doing something right for sure!

It still looks like a lovely garden, with many beautiful blooms. Our grass is so brown now. We had a little rain earlier on and it made a slight difference but now it's back to brown.

The heat has been really something, hasn't it? But I even with the hot temps, your garden looks really really nice....and well kept!! Mine is a bit of a jungle here at times. I always enjoy how you mix the leaf colors up in different area. Hope you had a great Monday.....and that cooler temps are on the way for you.....along with some much needed rain:)

Your daylilies are wonderful, but that group of daisies is fabulous!!! When temperatures hit 100, there's just nothing we as gardeners can do, it seems. Most plants just can't seem to take those extreme temperatures. So sorry you've had such hot weather, and drought combined with it. Still, you have quite a bit in your garden that's looking great! I love the color of that cotinus!

The Darby Creek Diaries said...

Your gardens sure look better than mine! If I can't get to them by a watering can every couple days, they are done for. One of my outdoor spigots is broken and dragging 4 hoses at once just isn't worth it. It makes me sad. Peaches were tiny and birds got the bulk of them. I do see apples. Hope they fare better.

Well, hang in there and don't over do!
Off to work...

Our SC gardens are looking tired due to the high heat and humidity, especially since we left them for two weeks to visit family in Europe. So sorry about the drought conditions in your area, but I have to say--your photos are lovely! Wishing you a nice, soaking rain and more moderate temps...

And to think, the spring showed so much promise but I'm sure you're like me and when you're looking at such a disaster, you're always planning for next season. Best.

Your photos and flowers are very lovely. You are doing an admirable job in your yard. We (and the garden) are struggling with the heat as well. I am in my garden each night. Refilling the bog garden pot, adding water to the pond, and feeding the fish. I pull a weed or two here and there... Low and behold I lost two plants- in just a day! Established plants. One in the waterfall rock garden and one in the perennial garden. Such a bummer when you work so hard. We pray for rain and cooler temps!

Beautiful blooms...so sorry the weather is so awful this year. I hope you get some relief soon...maybe things will bounce back once the cooler temps of fall return?

Hi Cher,
Your gardens are looking lovely despite all of the heat. It has been so hot and dry here too! All of our grass has dried up and gone yellow like straw...Hopefully the fall will be a little nicer for the mums.
All the Best,
Christine

Hi Cher-
Hey your gardens aren't doing too badly with all that drought and heat!
I noticed my Endless Summer Hydrangeas have no flowers. I have a feeling I won't be seeing any, which is a first for them since I've planted them. It's definitely a weird year. Dayllies are always faithful aren't they! Love your colors!
Let's keep the fingers crossed for better weather in August!

Cher, if you were wondering if I'm alive I am! I haven't been able to find time for blogging this summer, but plan to do it during the long, cold, frozen winter instead.

Hey, did you move?

And I just got back from Texas. That heat was a little much for my Canadian system!

Wow! These flowers are oh so-o-o beautiful Cher. They are not doing badly at beating the heat. My garden has not done so well. Have yourself a wonderful weekend.

Ooh, that's so frustrating. You wouldn't know it, because your garden is beautiful in these photos.

Colorado had some tough summers while we lived there with drought water restrictions to make it worse. It really changed how people gardened - everyone went xeric, and we learned to love lavender, corsican violets, echinacea, and russian sage :)
