Hydrangea Shrubs in Full Sun in Zone 5/6

Hydrangeas in bloom even in spite of the current heatwave affecting the country. It's just not possible to keep enough water going to the plants in my gardens and I'm at the point I'm surprised anything is still blooming, although I am sure seeing a lot of burn on everything. All these Hydranga are in full sun and do quite well.

I purchased this Hydrangea Vanilla Strawberry last year. Wasn't happy that I bought a potted plant online and received it bareroot with one of the major roots broken which I had to prune off. This Spring it did come back but part of it did not and obviously was affected by that root, so I am happy with my one whole bloom and gorgeous it is and and it will add the strawberry pink coloring over the next weeks.

I absolutely love Hydrangea Limelight and have two of them in my yard. These give you blooms that last until hard frost. It's one that I would never be without.

Photobucket
Hydrangea Quickfire blooms the quickest of my Hydrangea and I do really like it, but I don't get as many blooms and since I have several I am taking one or two out.

Photobucket
Hydrangea TarDiva. Lovely smaller blooms on these compared to Limelight. I like these also, but when you have Limelight, it's hard to notice the rest.

Your hydrangea are lovely. I wish I could grow them down here, but they do not like our heat and humidity.

Enjoy these beauties growing in your gardens.

Good morning... enjoyed seeing your hydrangeas. I too have several varieties. Without a doubt, Limelight is amazing... I have a couple planted with a Pink Diamond in full sun and the bloom count will be huge this year. Another Pink Diamond is in a fair amount of shade. My Uniques were all cut back last year, but are all in full sun and are filling out nicely but I suspect they will take a couple years to be at their best again. I believe they may bloom on old wood but am not sure of that. My Tardiva is getting quite large after many years and grows in a fair amount of shade, while my Angel's Blush is in too much shade and really needs to be moved so I can get more bloom... it's actually one of my favorites. The Swan blooms very well in partial shade for me, but is somewhat laggard and requires some staking. I have added a number of others in the past year and the names escape me just now... but I have to agree that Limelight is right up there at the head of the pack! Larry

Cher your Vanilla Strawberry hydrangea is doing better than mine. I do not have one bloom yet. LOL! Your Limelight looks like it is going to give you many blooms. A little cooler today. At least we can breath.

It's a very fine collection you have! Lots of variety...they take a few years to get established, then look out!

Hi Cher
So many nice hydrangeas and Limelight really is a star, isn't it? I love mine too and even bought Little Lime last year, just getting a load of flowers now.
I know what you mean about ordering from an on-line nursery. In the spring I saw a phlox I wanted and instead of getting a plant like I thought, a root in a bag arrived which didn't last long in the ground.

I love hydrangeas, though I don't have a lot of varieties like you do. Wonderful! Wish they could take the full sun here!

Hi Cher,

Your hydrangeas look beautiful, especially the vanilla strawberry. So glad you at least received one bloom from the plant. I think next year I will try to plant one. Not sure if it will survive our cold winters here, but we are zone 5.

It seems everyone loves Limelight. I wish I had not passed it up last month when I was buying shrubs. I may go look this weekend to see if they still have any.

I have not seen any hydrangeas other than the pink and blue varieties. I think yours are lovely and they have nice names too.

I am surprised your hydrangeas are still blooming with such high temperature. Mine are not blooming although the weather is not as hot. I always thought they do better in cool weather. Like Autumn Belle, I have not seen the Limelight. When there is no Limelight, something smaller would do. :)

Lovely hydrangeas! I think it would be possible to grow those in Norway too, perhaps I should try when I get a bigger garden...

My blue one in the front yard is never watered unless Mother Nature is here to help. It has adapted however and blooms each year, I love it.

Nice group of hydrangeas. I find that hydrangeas have always been so easy to grow, no matter where I have lived. There always seems to be a hybrid that will adjust (I guess not in the tropics though). Hope you're enjoying your Summer!

I just got a 'limelight', which I love! I can't decide where to plant it yet though, so it is in a container on my deck at the moment.

It's ben wonderful to see your hydrangeas, they are rather different to the ones I am familiar with. I have seen several photos of Limelight blossoms on blogs, they look spectacular.
